Nigerian Cake Festival and Flour Craft Exhibition Crowns Best Baker in Lagos
The much talked about biggest celebration of flour craft in Nigeria, the Nigerian Cake Festival and Flour Craft Exhibition, came to a close recently in Lagos with Idowu Olatubosun of Noble Cakes emerging top baker after a keen contest lasting 3 days.
The 3-day event was declared open by the Director General of the Federal Institute of Industrial Research Oshodi, FIIRO, represented by Mrs AA Osibanjo the Head, Baking and Milling Division. The winner of the first ever The Gospel Voice, E-Daniels, gave a soulful performance at the event as the young flour crafters worked at their first presentation in the baking
contest.
The event also featured a visit from children of the Children's Development Centre Surulere; they have a baking initiative called Tea Breakers as part of vocational training for the children at the centre.
About 30 top bakers indicated interest to compete at the event but only 4 were featured. Anita Izuakiti of La Bonte Cakes was crowned the first runner-up while Olaide of Alsome Bakery only made presentations on day one of the event. Another contestant, Frank Patrick of Snowflakes Artistry Port Harcourt, voluntarily pulled out of the contest. The event also featured a raffle draw and auction on day 3. Guest took home appliances such as Electric Kettle from the raffle draw while some of the cakes presented by contestants were auctioned off to guests. Organisers say 50% of proceeds from the auction will go to charity.
It was fun and laughter at the closing ceremony as Mrs Helen Odeleye, the Assistant Director Programmes of the NTA Lagos Network Centre proposed toasts to the success of the event and to Nigeria. She represented the Lagos Zonal Director of the NTA Mr Wole Coker, who was presented with one of the winning entries. Although the event was poorly attended, many guests praised the effort of the organizers saying it was a great initiative that would get better with sponsorship. Organisers of the Nigerian Cake Festival and Flour Craft Exhibition say their next event
will be held in the Federal Capital Territory Abuja in February 2015.
The initiative of Versatili Communications Limited is supported by Federal
Institute of Industrial Research Oshodi FIIRO, Lagos State Caterers and
