The pictures from Taylor Swift’s first cover for GQ magazine got everyone talking and the singer took to Instagram to thank her numerous fans saying, ‘50 million followers! Thanks so much guys. I’m pretty sure this is just because I have cute cats though.’
Her fan base is now higher than Beyonce and Kim Kardashian who have 47.5 and 48.4 followers each respectively, making her account the most popular account worldwide.
Swift’s Instagram success comes just days after the pop star talked about taking a break from the spotlight in her cover story with NME magazine. In the story, she said,”I think I should take some time off,” Swift said. “I think people might need a break from me. I’m going to … I don’t know. Hang out with my friends. Write new music. Maybe not write new music. I don’t know.”
It turns out this speech should not be taken seriously after all as the reigning queen will definitely love to enjoy the attention as she also has more records on Twitter – a whopping figure of 64.5 million followers.
According to Charles Porch, the head of global creative programs at Instagram, the rationale behind the display of figures from these celebrities’ accounts on the photo-based social media platform lies mainly in creating some fun for their fans. Porch told Reuters that “What Instagram is doing is giving all these ladies a direct line to their fans and, by having a direct line, they’re controlling their message’.
The next most followed accounts after that of Taylor Swift include Selena Gomez at 46.2 million and Ariana Grande, at 44.9 million while the most popular male celebrities on Instagram are Justin Bieber, with 40 million followers and President Barack Obama, with 4.7 million followers.
