Africa Internet Group (AIG) celebrated the World Food Day with a special food drive at the St Thomas Barnardo's Home in Lang’ata. The drive brought together staff members from the six companies under the Rocket Internet backed online ventures builder in celebration of the globally renowned day.
Hellofood, the city’s leading online food website launched You say, we give week long campaign to commemorate World Food day. Customers used social media to participate in the cause by voting food items that they’d like donated to the Children’s home.  AIG Ventures operating in the country then joined in to support the cause that marked the 36th event since its invention.
“We are proud to be part of this honorable initiative because we believe in the fundamental right for every human being to be free from hunger” Said Duncan Muchangi, the Country Manager for Hellofood Kenya who led the team in organizing the online campaigns and presenting the donation at the school located along Lang’ata road. His counterpart, Cyrus Onyiego from Jovago reiterated by noting that, the call to hunger eradication takes a lead position on the Millennium Development Goals and called for every individuals to renew their commitment on the MDGs even as the year draws to a close.
According to statistics by the World Food Program, about one in every nine people on earth do not have enough food to help them lead a healthy life. The report goes on to point out Sub-Saharan Africa as having the highest prevalence of hunger; based on the high percentage of undernourished population which stands at one person out of every four.
Increasing corporate philanthropy in support of such outstanding courses goes further beyond building a company’s image to stemming the negative impact of a hungry population on both social and economic scales. The coming together of companies such as Jovago.com, Jumia, Kaymu, Hellofood , Easy Taxi and Lamudi also offers employees of respective ventures an opportunity to make a difference through their jobs thus boosting teamwork and a sense of commitment to both the course and the business.
The World Food Day celebrates the creation of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) on October 16, 1945, whose main goals point to the eradication of hunger, elimination of poverty and sustainable management and utilization of natural resources. The internationally acclaimed day has been marked by hunger awareness campaigns, food drives and similarly themed events across the world, since its first celebration in Quebec, Canada in 1979.
