Spanish Club Names Stadium Gate After Late Nigerian Goalkeeper, Wilfred Agbonavbare



The former Super Eagles goalie who died on Tuesday, January 27, 2015 in a Spanish hospital, has been buried in Spain. The burial was attended by Rayo Vallecano president, Raúl Martín Presa and both active and retired footballers, alongside his children, Wilson and Wintia Agbonavbare. 

After a meeting on Wednesday, January 28, 2015, the late goalkeeper's former club decided to honour the Nigerian for his contributions to the club.


A statement released by the club confirmed the development: 'The Board of Directors of the Club has decided unanimously to keep alive the memory of Wilfred and therefore will call the Gate 1 Vallecas Stadium, Gate Wilfred Agbonavbare.

The club managers also thanked everyone who showed love towards Agbonavbare while he battled cancer on behalf of the late goalkeeper's family.'

The directors added that they were touched by the countless messages of affection that have been coming to club on a sad day for everyone.
