Leonardo Dicaprio Pledges a Ton of Money to Help Save the Planet

Leonardo DiCaprio is doing what any extremely wealthy actor who loves the planet should do.

On Tuesday, Leo received the Crystal Award for “improving the state of the world” at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. During his acceptance speech he called out the “corporate greed of the coal, oil and gas industries” who “have denied and even covered-up the evidence of our changing climate.”

During the speech, DiCaprio also announced that his foundation—the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation—is giving $15 million to environmental projects to help decrease the world’s dependency on fossil fuels and improve the environment.

The award and the donation comes at a perfect time for DiCaprio, who just won a Golden Globe and is nominated for an Oscar for The Revenant, a movie in which he’s one-on-one against the environment. He’s been a longtime advocate for the planet, but his recent press tour for the film provided some ideal opportunities to segue from things like sleeping in an animal carcass and needing to move shoots because of a lack of snow to saying things like “This year is a massive tipping point in the climate struggle.”
