Junya Watanabe’s African-Inspired Runway Pieces Spark Racism Debate

Junya Watanbe Spring 2016 Collection Runway - BellaNaija - June2015007

At the Paris Men's Fashion Week 2015, menswear designer – Junya Watanabedebuted an African-inspired Spring/Summer 2016 collection that raised eyebrows and brought a lot of attention to his showcase. With white male models dressed in traditional style outfits accessorized with necklaces featuring dried bones, spears, masks etc, African textile wraps, Massai collars and rocking locs and cornrows, the collection seemed like a referral to the days of colonialism.

According to Style.com, the collection was created in collaboration with Vlisco and Paris-based stores specializing in African jewelry, pieces etc.

Of course social media attacked the collection referring to it as the "Rachel Dolezal collection".

Various websites like The Cut have expressed their thoughts about the collection citing it took inspiration from Africa without employing black models to model some of the pieces. The fashion brand is yet to make any official statement on the collection, and that just leads critics to think they see nothing wrong with it.

“Let’s keep the gay marriage rights laws away from our shores” - Adesuwa Onyenokwe

TW publisher Adesuwa Onyenokwe shares her thoughts on the recent legalization of gay marriage in the US and how it can catch on around the world.

I wonder if people have really thought about the implications of the American Supreme Court judgement in favour of gay marriages across the USA. Before that decision and Obama's accent to the law, it was illegal in only 37 of the 52 states!
However this development is a 'yes' that may ripple around the world because the USA is the world's big brother. They sneeze the rest of the world catches a cold. So that's where my concern lies. Being gay will soon become 'fashionable'.

Gay people are humans first and I respect that, but if it were a desirable state, then God wouldn't have "created them , male and female" as the bible teaches! So I believe. Because God is all knowing and never makes mistakes, He also must have created gay people too, just like He created the sick and the poor that Christ says will always be with us!

What do we do with people with one defect or the other? We love them and help them live better lives, not legislate that their condition is acceptable. In other words I believe just like people with Downs Syndrome, for example, are minus one chromosome; people that exhibit gay tendencies are plus or minus one hormone either way.

With more female hormones (estrogen), a guy can be effeminate, and with more male hormones (testosterone), a girl can be masculine. My layman's theory obviously but it is simple logic. It is also simple logic that if all men married men and women married women, where would the babies come from?

Maybe petri dishes in the laboratories? I know some will say not everyone is gay, but I wonder for how long that will be, because we all have tendencies to be adventurous and we may have many more people experimenting and going the lesbian or homosexual way.

The fact that it is taboo holds quite a number of people back from even trying it. When it comes to the human desires our bodies can be traitors and take pleasure from even the most bizarre, depending how far we are willing to go.

Barriers help reign our potentially wild desires in. My summary is that anyone can be gay. Period. Though the tendency may be higher in some than in others, still it is a matter of taste and sight. Also some might say barrier or not there are those who will try it anyway, I say yes but is that why we should make it a free way?

Please note I am not for discrimination against anyone whether I support their sexual preferences or not. They sure have rights. Since I do not understand 'it' forgive me if I say maybe they should seek more avenues to finding a 'cure' or a best way to manage 'it' otherwise, I fear the human specie may just go extinct like Pope Francis has rightly pointed out.

But like my 19 year old son says "God created the world and He can surely fix it", but then He needs human eyes, ears, hands and feet to do so, which is why I am sharing my opinion hoping it would change a few minds to have us all canvassing that this condemnable law doesn't ripple anywhere near our shores!

Finito!

Mikel Obi Set For Inter Milan Switch?

According to the Daily Mail, one of Inter Milan's targets is chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel. Mikel would be a second choice signing in case that Inter Milan, who just acquired Monaco's French midfielder Geoffrey Kondogbia, can't take hold of Galatasaray's Felipe Melo.

Inter Milan is also in talks with attacking midfielder Juan Cuadrado according to Gianluca DiMarzio.

The Italian journalist reports that with Fiorentina in advanced talks to secure Salah's definitive transfer, a window has opened to Inter Milan to swoop in for the Colombian player. The deal would be a loan with a forced option to buy, as is custom with most Italian transfers that they might consider a risky investment.

Both rumours make sense. Mikel was most recently linked with UAE club Al-Ain, but many people feel that he still has something to offer in a top European club, and Italy seems to be a perfect fit for him.

As for Cuadrado, after a less than impressive Copa America showing excluding one game against Brazil his future with Chelsea doesn't look any brighter. Chelsea might be wise in trying to cut or diminish their losses after signing the player in the latest winter transfer window.

Thando Hopa turns Model to Challenge Perception of Albinism, “I’m a Different Shade of Normal” – South African Albino Lawyer

Thando Hopa - BellaNaija - June2015
Thando Hopa with Gert Johan-Coetzee
According to Daily Mail, an albino woman – Thando Hopa, born and living in South Africa, has turned to the profession of modelling for an inspiring cause – to change the attitude of people towards albinism.
The 25-year-old Layer was persuaded to enter the profession by celebrated fashion designer – Gert-Johan Coetzee, and has since used it as a tool to reaching others like her and the world, starting with South Africa.
According to her – “I eventually decided beauty is a decision and I am going to be beautiful despite what people say. My tagline is ‘a different shade of normal'”.
Thando Hopa - BellaNaija - June2015002
She stated – “I had been approached to do modelling before, but I didn’t go for it because I never saw the benefits. I thought, “It’s such a shallow profession – why would I want to do that? I am a lawyer.
But after meeting with Gert in 2011, she started to consider the prospect. “Gert came to me and asked me if I would like to do a shoot and I said I would consider it.” “And then I spoke to my sister. And my sister said to me, “Don’t look at modelling as modelling. Look at it as an opportunity for you to actually change perception of albinism. Remember how you grew up. Remember how people really treated you.“.”
Thando recalled how she used to get hugged by strangers for good luck, her teachers thinking she was mentally challenged due to her poor eye-sight and how a woman once screamed at her on the street, referring to her as the devil’s child.
Now, Thando has walked numerous runways, had shoots and appeared on the first issue of Forbes Life Africa.
Thando Hopa - BellaNaija - June2015003Thando Hopa - BellaNaija - June2015004
Narrating her first runway experience she said – “The dress was gorgeous – black and green. I can tell you, I have never felt so expensive in my life. But I was actually so scared because in essence that was the first time I really walked in heels. I was even saying a little prayer when I was walking, “God, please don’t let me fall on this catwalk!’ I was absolutely frightened.”
Thando Hopa - BellaNaija - June2015005
Thanks to her modelling, Thando says her confidence had greatly increased and she no longer covers her skin with layers of clothes and makeup. She said – “I could never go out without make-up but as time goes on, your confidence just grows. It took years for me to get to a point where I could walk around without make-up.” “People tell me I have become a positive influence for their children, for them to see that they can go beyond their circumstances.”
Thando Hopa - BellaNaija - June2015001
Such an inspiring story.
