The 38-year-old was photographed in Australia on Monday, where she is about to begin production on her latest directorial project, the film "Unbroken." The large design appears on two lines on her right inner forearm.
According to an Arabic linguistics professor consulted by omg!, it appears to be an Arabic saying and it abuts another tattoo that she has in the same language (the word for "determination"). However, the photos weren't clear enough to determine exactly what the phrase is.
Jolie showed off the ink as she climbed aboard a water taxi in Sydney, and it's definitely a new addition. In June, she made a series of red carpet appearances with fiancé Brad Pitt, who was promoting "World War Z," and the actress — who had recently gone public with her preventive double mastectomy — did not have the tattoo at that point.
But the megastar is known for her extensive body art collection. Most notably, of course, is the ink on her upper left arm — the latitude and longitude coordinates of the birthplaces for Pitt and their six children.
Perhaps we'll get a better look at Jolie's tat this fall when she hits the red carpet to accept an Oscar for her humanitarian work. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced last week that they will present her with the honorary Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award at the Academy's 5th annual Governors Awards on November 16.
Until then, we'll keep our eyes peeled for her next Australia sighting. In addition to starting production on the film, which is about Olympic track star and war hero Louis "Louie" Zamperini, she's been out and about with her six kids, taking them to visit the Taronga Zoo over the weekend.
