ITALY PLEDGES TO SUPPORT NIGERIA IN FIGHTING INSECURITY

The  Italian Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr Fulvio Rustico, has announced plans by his Government to support the Federal Government's efforts at fighting the activities of terrorists in the country.

Rustico disclosed this on Sunday night, at a ceremony to celebrate the Italian National Day in Lagos.

He said that the Italian Government was ready to share her past experience of fighting terrorism with the Nigerian Government.

"Italy has known the grief stemming from terrorism for over a decade of its history, and through much efforts, Italy has overcome terrorism today.

"Italy will now, therefore, stand by the Nigerian Government in its fight to tackle terrorism's woes, as well as in mending the sufferings of the people.

"We have no doubt that the Nigerian Government and Nigerians will triumph over the evils of the Boko Haram insurgency,'' he said.

The envoy said that the Italian Government was aware of the role and importance of Nigeria in Africa, and the world at large.

He noted that Nigeria had become the first economy in Africa and was among Italy's most important partners globally.

Rustico expressed his government's readiness to organise specialised training programmes for the Nigerian Police, the Immigration Service, the Customs, the Armed Forces and other security agencies.

He added that his government's support for Nigeria was underway by the Italian Carabinieri, the Guardia di Finanza and the Polizia di Stato.

Rustico, who described Nigeria as a country with abundant resources, also restated his country's commitment  to strengthening relations with Nigeria in the years ahead.
