Nigeria's Golden Eaglets Win Another Friendly

Golden Eaglets on Friday recorded a 2-1 victory against Abuja-based foremost College of Football in yet another trial match at the NFF/FIFA Goal Project Pitch in Abuja.

Saley Yahaya gave College of Football the curtain raiser as early as the second minute but Kelechi Nwakali and Dauda Abdul-Ganiyu scored two 'text-book' goals in 44th and 72nd minute of the highly entertaining match watched by an impressive crowd.

It was Eaglets' first real test against a quality opposition with College of Football parading many gifted players who failed to make the cut in Nigeria's 2013 FIFA Under-17 World Cup winning team.

Expectedly they came into the game with stronger mentality as they kicked off on a fast tempo. Yahaya virtually exploited a momentary loss of concentration at the rear of the Golden Eaglets to fire an angular shot in the box beyond goalkeeper Amos Benjamin barely two minutes into the game. From then one, it was a ding-dong affair as both sides tried to gain the upper hand.

Almost at the half hour, Benjamin was forced to make a good safe following a well-taken shot by Amara Christian.  Yet Golden Eaglets were searching for the needed equalizer but were stoutly stopped with no breathing space for Kelechi Nwakali and Kehinde Ayinde.

But within a minute to spare in the first half, the Golden Eaglets surged forward from the left flank and in his characteristic manner, Ayinde evaded his shadows and promptly gave a well-laid pass to Nwakali; who blasted a pile driver into the far corner of the net beyond goalkeeper David Nwolokor for the much needed equalizer.

On resumption, both teams made some changes but there was little to separate them but for occasional flashes here and there. Goalkeeper Benjamin twice made instinct saves in the 57th and 65th minute to deny College of Football who in the meantime, had virtually curtailed the Golden Eaglets to their own half.

But the Eaglets gradually worked their way upfront and in the 72nd minute, Henry Akibi out-paced his marker on the right flank and gave the ball to Ayinde yet again. Ayinde cleverly side-stepped the ball on the path of Abdul-Ganiyu who blasted the ball beyond Nwolokor for the Eaglets' winning goal.
