A complainant, Joy Dominic on Thursday broke down in tears at the Upper Customary Court, Daura road, Kaduna, when the court ordered her boyfriend to be remanded in police custody.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Joy had dragged the boyfriend, Mohammed Ashafa to the court for allegedly beating her and "causing grievous hurt". She had initially gone to Kabala Doki Police Station, Kaduna on 15 October at about 8 p.m., accusing Ashafa of beating and leaving her with a swollen face after an argument. The case was then brought to the court by police prosecutor, Sgt Dare Komolafe.

Komolafe told the court that the complainant had left her hand bag containing trousers, a shirt and make-up kits with the accused and when she went to retrieve it he allegedly beat her up. Joy had in her testimony before the court said Ashafa had no reason to hurt her."I had to go to his house to retrieve the bag; he escorted me to the bus stop but on reaching there he started beating me for no reason," she said. When his plea was taken, Ashafa agreed to the charge against him, and the presiding officer, Mrs Dorothy Inwulale, granted him bail in the sum of N30,000.

When Inwulale ordered the accused to be remanded in police custody until he meets the bail condition, Joy broke down and wept, begging the court not to detain her boyfriend. Her plea was however ignored by the presiding officer, who adjourned the case till 20 November, for continuation of hearing.
